Rooted in the music of North Carolina’s mountains and Piedmont, Chapel Hill-based Mipso gives these traditional influences a distinctly modern twist. With an old-school combination of fiddle, mandolin, bass, guitar, and four voices in close harmony, Mipso’s Jacob, Wood,
Joseph, and Libby mix bluegrass ingredients with a healthy does of 21st century energy. Over the past two years Mipso has released an EP and a full-length album titled “Long, Long Gone” and performed to enthusiastic crowds across North Carolina, from Asheville to Greenville and many places in between. This year alone they’ve performed sold out concerts at Carrboro’s historic Cat’s Cradle three times, solidifying their place as the most promising young band to
come out of Chapel Hill in a long, long time. The group will graduates from the University of North Carolina in May of 2013 with plans to take Mipso on the road far beyond their home state.

.
To create his fifth full-length album Start Livinʼ, Hawaii-based singer/guitarist/songwriter Donavon Frankenreiter holed up in a Southern California studio for seven days with his longtime bassist Matt Grundy—and no one else. The follow-up to 2010ʼs Glow, Start Livinʼ is a nine-track selection of folk-infused songs that sweetly reflect the simplicity of their recording. With its smooth showcasing of Frankenreiterʼs rich, honey-thick vocals and masterful guitar work, Start Livinʼ bears all the intimacy of an impromptu back-porch performance and the tenderness of a treasured love letter. “Start Livinʼ is basically a love album,” says Frankenreiter, who co-produced the record alongside Matt Grundy and Adam Ableman. “Most of the songs are about my wife and our two boys, and the life that weʼve built together in Hawaii.” Thanks to Frankenreiterʼs infectious warmth and finely honed pop sensibilities, each of those songs has the singular effect of drawing the listener into that bright and breezy world for a blissed-out
moment.

MORE INFO
The Mountain Goats began life in a Norwalk employee-housing studio apartment that had awesome deco tiling on the bathroom floor but little more to recommend the place as a living space. Still, you take what you can get, and it was ridiculously cheap. In this room, equipped with a dual-cassette recorder, John D. started setting some of his poetry to music, using a guitar he’d gotten for a few bucks at a nearby strip mall music store. His idea at the time was that eventually his day job would be “poet.” Young men have all kinds of crazy ideas about what they’re going to end up doing for a living.
